Overdue consumer debts owed to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro amounted to R2.376 billion at the end of the last financial year on June 30, 2014, according to figures published by National Treasury.

Of this, R1.718 billion (72.3%) had been outstanding for more than 90 days; R91.8 million (3.8%) for between 61 and 90 days, and R154.5 million for be-tween 31 and 60 days.

The balance has been owing for up to 30 days.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s overdue consumer debts amount to just 4.5% of the total amount of R52.879 billion owed to all the eight metros, of which R17.386 billion (32.9%) is owed to the City of Johannesburg and R10.386 billion (20.3%) to Ekurhuleni.

Overdue consumer debt in Nelson Mandela Bay increased by R397.4 million or 20.1% between the end of the 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial year, which was the third highest after Mangaung (31.9%) and Ekurhuleni (21.7%). The Eastern Cape’s other metro, Buffalo City was owed just over R1 billion at the end of 2013/14, of which R824.9 million had been outstanding for over 90 days.

The National Treasury figures also show that the 45 municipalities in the Eastern Cape were owed a total of R6.17 billion by consumers at the end of the 2013/14 financial year.

Of the total, R4.9 billion or 78.8% has been outstanding for over 90 days; R219.1 million (3.5%) for between 61 and 90 days, and R333.6 million (5.4% for between 31 and 60 days.

The balance of R754.3 million (12.2%) has been owed for up to 30 days.

The National Treasury figures also show that Nelson Mandela Bay collected R2.846 billion from the sale of electricity in the last financial year, which was 89.2% of revenue that was projected in the adjustments budget, and spent R2.476 billion, which was 86.5% of projected expenditure.

With regard to water, Nelson Mandela Bay collected R719.9 million in revenue from consumers and spent R512.1 mil-lion on bulk purchases. - Metrominutes
