Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality welcomes arrest of suspect in Queen Victoria statue vandalism

APRIL 13, 2015

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on Monday said that it welcomes the arrest of a suspect in the case of vandalism that saw paint sprawled across a statue of former British monarch, Queen Victoria, in the Port Elizabeth city centre.

"The Municipality is in contact with the SAPS in this case and trusts that the culprit or culprits will be brought to book following the judicial process.

"We are also disturbed that someone leaked video footage to a local news publication which in turn published the footage on electronic media platforms, thus potentially jeopardizing the police case," says Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Director of Communications, Roland Williams.

"Notwithstanding, we are confident that the police and the judicial system will ensure that the vandal/s is/are caught and punished accordingly. In this respect, we request all to allow the police space and time to carry out their investigation to its full conclusion."
