Nelson Mandela Bay residents escape blackouts due to strike

JULY 27, 2015

Nelson Mandela Bay residents were reportedly spared Stage 2 load shedding for two days over the weekend after staff at the Energy and Electricity Department of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality embarked on a strike over allowances.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said that senior management from the Office of the City and Electricity and Energy Department were currently engaging the workers to try and end the informal strike.

He, however,  also said that the strike was not entirely the reason why residents were not cut off - as Eskom did have the capacity to implement load shedding in the municipality on its own.

The strike also resulted in  a delay in the repairing of a faulty line, which went down in the Seaview Area on Friday night, as staff were not prepared to attend to the matter.
