NEW BEGINNINGS: Urban Blend looks to become the café for the entire family
I must confess that I have always had a thing for coffee shop dining. Coffee shops offer a completely different experience to what you normally get at the big restaurant franchises. Actually, most of these shops offer better service, great food and family outing experiences usually at reasonable rates.
One such establishment is Urban Blend Café, which is conveniently situated at 58, 3rd Avenue in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth – making it easily accessible from all corners of the city. It took me and a colleague, whom I had brought out for a bite, about 10 minutes in lunch-hour traffic to reach Urban Blend from Central.
There, we were warmly welcomed by the new owner, Pierre, who briefly shared with us his plans to transform Urban Blend into a top family-oriented café where kids can play in a Playstation room while their parents catch up on the latest news over coffees and great food.
After our chat, we were presented with Urban Blend’s menu which featured a choice of appetising breakfasts, meals and pizzas as well as several cold beverages wines and coffees. Since it was lunch time, we opted to try their large Meat Lovers Pizza.
Our order taken, we took time to appreciate Urban Blend’s relaxed, samba atmosphere. Pierre had said they can accommodate up to 80 people. They also have a fully-stocked separate Wine Bar and a wood-fired pizza oven - the first time I have ever seen one in a coffee shop.
When our pizza arrived fresh from the oven, it immediately received the thumbs up. It was that good; crusty and meaty with a salty flavour thanks to the warm cheese and sauce. Being a pizza lover myself, I rated our serving among my favourites to date. Judging from his empty plate and nods, my colleague had also enjoyed his portion.
For our generous pizza portion, including two Cokes, our bill came to just R103!
Besides a selection of appetising meals in their daily Specials section, you will be happy to know that Urban Blend also offers Pensioners specials on Mondays and Tuesdays. Pierre said they would be installing Wi-Fi internet access for their patrons soon. He also has plans to utilise the café’s huge space for family parties and corporate events. Urban Blend Cafe looks set for greater things.
Urban Blend Café is open on Mondays to Thursdays between 7:30 and 16:00, Friday 7:30 till late, Saturday 7:30 to 14:00. For bookings, call 041 363 0452 or visit 58, 3rd Avenue in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth.
