New eco-luxe estate answers the call for secure living in an idyllic country location

With long stretches of beach and lush natural forests, Chintsa Village, situated at the mouth of the Chintsa River, is a jewel in the Eastern Cape’s crown. Located 40 km north of East London, the area has long been known by holiday-makers as a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Welcoming those who would like to enjoy a more permanent escape is Olivewood Private Estate and Golf Club, a newly launched lifestyle estate that stretches over 1 000 hectares of the Chintsa Valley, overlooking the pristine beaches of the Sunshine Coast.

Estate living is one of South Africa’s fastest growing property trends and the country already has approximately 6 000 gated communities. Property offerings will include three to four-bedroom family-oriented homes from 490m2, two to three bedroom homes for young families from 225m2 and one-bedroom apartment style homes for single professionals or retirees from 145m2.

A selection of design concepts cater to homeowners with a variety of needs. Modern terraced townhouses enjoy multi-levelled views and promote efficient living, lock-up-and-go homes, in medium density clusters, foster convenience and community lifestyles and exclusive family homes set on individual stands give homeowners privacy and space.

TCN Architects place an emphasis on eco-friendly, sustainable designs using natural materials and incorporating lighting and ventilation. Homes are designed to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the surrounding landscape. On hilltop plains, walls give way to glazed openings, integrating views of grassland plateaus or lush natural forests.  Houses set alongside the banks of the Chintsa River have been designed with wide open verandas and terraces so residents can enjoy the serene waterside atmosphere.

Included in Olivewood’s elegant lifestyle offerings is an 18-hole championship golf course which was created during the first phase of development, so the estates founding residents can look forward to christening its pristine greens. The inspired-by-nature course is unlike any in South Africa – shaped by the undulating valley landscape, with hole locations determined by the natural contours and ridges of the earth. The course was created with respect for indigenous flora and fauna and golfers can look forward to local spectators including nyala, impala, blesbok and waterbuck.

Central to the Olivewood vision is eco-luxe living and amongst its green credentials the estate already boasts a solar powered clubhouse, rainwater harvesting, grey water irrigation for the golf course and bent grass greens. All homes that have been designed for the estate include rainwater tanks and solar panels. 

The land sits on the historic Schafli Farm, which dates back to the 1880s and provides the perfect backdrop for the old-fashioned sense of community that Olivewood aims to foster. When construction began in 2012, care was taken to preserve certain aspects of the land’s heritage including the 1920s farm house which was renovated in its original colonial style and renamed Governors House. Using the renovations as an opportunity to showcase Olivewood quality the Clubhouse venue has been fitted with hand-crafted wooden floors, a hand-crafted wooden bar and immaculate finishes. Hand-woven Persian rugs and original artwork complete the aesthetic.

The cost of homes will vary according to the chosen stand and finishes of the build. Residents will pay a forecasted monthly levy of R2 500, which includes the maintenance of the common areas, roads, services, waste management, fencing and security. Membership for the golf club is a pre-requisite for residents and membership fees are calculated separately.

Of the 100 plots now available in the estate’s scenic Summerfield neighbourhood, 18 stands are already purchased pre-launch and three homes are currently under construction. Future plans for the estate include the development of a mature living section which will include smaller homes enclosing shared facilities.
