New vehicle sales continue to fall in October

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a significant drop in the sales of new vehicles for October, with exports posting its first loss of the year.

Aggregate total domestic sales were down 8.6% to 54 244 units from the 59 335 recorded over the same period last year. Individual segments showed mixed results however with the sales of passenger vehicles falling 10.9% from last year’s 40 608 units to 36 175, and light commercial vehicles posting a 4.1% decrease from 15 817 to 15 171.

A decline of 8.9% was posted in the sales of heavy duty commercial vehicles, while the market for medium duty units showed an upturn of 11.2%. With the unveiling of the refreshed Ford Ranger and the run-out of pre-facelift models, exports were down 13.9% from 32 199 units in 2014, to 27 732 this year.
