New vehicle sales on the slide in May

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a fifth consecutive drop in the sales of new vehicles for May, with exports posting its smallest gain of the year so far.

Aggregate total domestic sales for the month fell by 10.3% from 47 832 unit last year, to 42 907 examples this year. Individual segments were also down with new passenger vehicles sales falling 12.9% from 31 161 to 27 143, while light commercial vehicles went down 5.3% from 14 199 to 13 446.

Decreases were also posted in the sales of medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles, with the market dropping by 13.1% and 5.0% respectively. Down from April’s record 39.2% increase, exports for May were recorded a marginal 0.8% upswing from 33 414 to 33 676.
