New vehicles sales start year on flat note

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a poor start to 2016 with a 6.9% decrease in the sales of new vehicles.

Aggregate total domestic sales for January dropped from 52 228 units last year to 48 615 this year. Individual segments were also down with new passenger vehicles sales falling 6.1% from 37 208 to 34 936, while light commercial vehicles registered a decline of 8.3% from last year’s 13 164 units, to 12 074.

Notable decreases were also posted in the sales of medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles, with the market contracting by 15.6% and 12.8% respectively. Exports also started the year weak with a decline of 21.9% from 16 709 to 13 057 units.
