Ngcebetsha clan not part of Mandela family: Mandla

JANUARY 14, 2015

Nelson Mandela's grandson, Mandla Mandela, on Tuesday called on the Ngcebetsha clan to stop claiming that they are related to the Mandela family. Mandla, who is also a Chief of the AbaThembu, claimed that some Ngebetsha family members wanted to interfere in his family’s affairs.

He said that the Ngcebetsha clan is not part of the core family while addressing the media shortly after Eastern Cape High court, in Mthatha, dismissed ANC stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s, bid to stop a Mandela family meeting scheduled for Qunu on Friday.

Meeting to decide who leads Mandela family

Reports are that the Qunu meeting will clarify who should be the head of the Mandela family.

“Many people who want to be on the bandwagon today, and even in this case we saw an individual insisting that they are the member of the core of the Mandelas. They are not members of my father's family, his brother Thembekile, my grandfather, or Nkosi Mphakanyiswa,” Mandla said.

“They are part of a different family to the Ngcebetshas, yet they are claiming to be Mandelas, and I want again to repeat that the matters of the Mandela’s be discussed by the Mandelas and that will always be my call.”

Meanwhile, Madikizela-Mandela's lawyer, Mvuzo Notyesi whose application was dismissed, believes that there will be chaos at the Friday meeting.
