Nine initiates hospitalised after botched circumcision

JUNE 18, 2015

Seven initiates have reportedly been hospitalised in Ntabankulu and two others have been treated and discharged in Mthatha. They were suffering from injuries sustained when circumcision procedures went wrong.

Eastern Cape Department of Health Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, told the SABC that their monitoring teams have visited initiation schools around the area.

"There are a number of boys who fled to the bush when the monitoring team tried to assess them. This is a grave concern for the department because what it means is that those boys in few weeks time they will come back to our hospitals when it will be late at the time because doctors might have nothing to do to help them.

"It's advisable that these boys are taken to hospital early enough so that medical intervention can be done," Kupelo said.
