“NMB Metro not caring enough” - Trollip

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has accused the Metro of losing interest in maintaining infrastructure following power cuts in Uitenhage and Despatch on Monday.

Speaking in a statement, DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip said the party would be submitting a motion to African National Congress’ (ANC) Mayoral Committee member for infrastructure and engineering, Andile Mfunda, to draw up an intervention plan with the aim of preventing future unannounced blackouts.

“The Metro’s industrial sector, most of which exists in Uitenhage, is the economic industrial hub of Nelson Mandela Bay and as such needs to be protected from shutdown,” Trollip said.

“We have consistently called for the formation of sub-councils to improve service delivery and technician response time to a forgotten part of the Metro, but nothing is being done by a local government that does not care”.

He also said that the party would be tabling an alternative budget to council to prevent the crisis from the escalating, adding that the municipality must take responsibility for the outage.
