NMMU abuzz with intervarsity action

AUGUST 11, 2016

NMMU’s South Campus will be abuzz with activity on Saturday when hundreds of students from four tertiary institutions across the Eastern Cape gather for the annual intervarsity sporting extravaganza.

The Madibaz, Rhodes, University of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu University will compete in 13 sporting codes in Port Elizabeth as they vie for the title of top regional sporting university.

“We would like to welcome all the students for this celebration of varsity sporting activity,” said Madibaz Sport deputy director Riaan Osman.

“This provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to renew old friendships and create new ones while enjoying healthy competition on the sports fields.”

Osman also welcomed the fact that this year’s intervarsity coincided with the Rio Olympics, an event that sees sport bringing together the best athletes from around the world.

It tied in with the main purpose of intervarsity which, he said, was to bring together student-athletes from the entire province – with sport being the unifying factor.

The Madibaz have traditionally been a dominant force at the intervarsity, where results and camaraderie have equal billing.

Spectators will be treated to around 70 matches across the various sporting codes, with football promising to be one of the highlights.

Fort Hare’s inclusion in the Varsity Football tournament is an indication of their strength and they will be keen to make an impact.

The football kicks off when the Madibaz take on Rhodes at 9am, followed by the match between Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu. The winners will bring the curtain down on the intervarsity when they play in the final at 4pm.

In the main rugby matches of the day, Fort Hare will play Walter Sisulu at 12.20, followed by the game between Madibaz and Rhodes at 2pm.

Action starts at 9am across the board.

The full list of codes is: pool, basketball, football, hockey, karate, netball, rugby, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, chess, debating and law.
