NMMU management receives four different petitions from protesting students

SEPTEMBER 23, 2016

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Friday said that it has now received four different petitions from various student formations participating in the countrywide #FeesMustFall protests, the latest of which was handed over at a mass meeting in the Kraal at lunch-time on Friday.

"Management will be working through the various demands to provide a response to students by Monday.

"Despite management’s best efforts to resume operations on Monday, they were met with resistance from the students, who are determined to continue their protest action in favour of free higher education," it said.

"As such, we advise that operations at NMMU will remain suspended for Monday.

"Depending on the students’ response, and based on NMMU’s assessment of the situation on the ground, the University may be compelled to implement drastic measures going forward, including possibly suspending lectures until we can guarantee the safety of all our students and staff.

"We will advise you of the way forward before the close of business on Monday."
