NMMU staff and students horrified by brutal weekend attack on another student

OCTOBER 4, 2016

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Tuesday said that its staff and students are shocked and appalled at the news of a second-year female student being raped, brutally assaulted and left for dead on Saturday night at Schoenmakerskop, Port Elizabeth.

"This attack comes just two months after EMC student Thabani Ngwekazi‚ 28‚ was killed and his 21-year-old friend raped when they were hijacked outside the Varsity Park student residences in North End, Port Elizabeth," the university said.

"The student attacked this weekend‚ who cannot be named because of the nature of the offence‚ was abducted after a night of partying at Cafe Loxion in Parliament Street‚ Central‚ and at the flat of an acquaintance.

"On Sunday‚ police combed the area along Victoria Drive before finding the crime scene in the restricted municipal Driftsands Natural Area‚ which borders Schoenmakerskop."

It said that Detectives from the specialist family violence‚ child protection and sexual offences unit have taken over the case.

"The university has a zero tolerance stance on sexual violence and will continue with campaigns aimed at ending violence against vulnerable groups."
