No guarantees you'll watch SONA tonight: Eskom

FEBRUARY 12, 2015

Power utility, Eskom, says it cannot guarantee that South Africans will experience no load-shedding during President Jacob Zuma’s much-anticipated State-of-the-Nation Address, as the power grid will remain vulnerable for the rest of this week.

Eskom says several units are currently out of service because of breakdowns and routine maintenance.

Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says, "We will do everything to keep our machines running but if many of them have technical breakdowns then it will mean that we will not be able to meet the demand.

“We are going to do everything possible at the State of the Nation Address but our primary duty is to provide electricity."

On Wednesday night, Eskom escalated load-shedding from Stage 1 to Stage 2. It cut 2000 megawatts of demand from the grid.
