Nomhle Gaga re-elected as Makana Municipality Mayor

SEPTEMBER 16, 2015

The African National Congress (ANC) in the struggling Makana Local Municipality on Tuesday closed rank and voted, in a secret ballot, to re-appoint Nomhle Gaga as new Mayor.

This is after Gaga resigned last week after she was elected as the new Mayor on 28 August amid a legal challenge by the Democratic Alliance (DA), which claimed that the Speaker, Yandisa Vara, had ignored the law in Gaga's appointment.

"The DA walked out of Friday’s Special Council meeting in protest after the Speaker of the Council, Rachel Madinda Isaacs, ignored provisions of the Municipal Structures Act and allowed the 'election' of Cllr Nomhle Gaga to proceed without a secret ballot," Cllr Les Reynolds, from the DA Makana Caucus, said then in a statement.

The Makana Local Municipality Mayoral Committee was also dissolved after Gaga's resignation.

In Wednesday's election, Gaga was up against Reynolds and won with 19 votes, while Reynolds received six.

The Congress of the People (COPE) abstained from voting.

After her re-election, Gaga re-appointed the same mayoral committee that was dissolved last week.

Vara was also re-elected as the Speaker.

Gaga was appointed following the sacking of former Mayor, Zamuxolo Peter.

Peter is reportedly now in charge of Tourism at the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
