Northern Areas gang wars get government attention

FEBRUARY 19, 2016

The Chairperson of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS), Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is expected to lead a delegation of Ministers, Deputy Ministers and MECs on a community outreach and Imbizo programme to Port Elizabeth's troubled Northern Areas on Monday. The visit will focus on Gelvandale and Booysen’s Park.

According to the police, the purpose of the outreach is to engage directly with community members, community leaders and stakeholders on issues pertaining to crime, gangsterism and drugs.

"The government izimbizo approach seeks to promote participatory democracy where people can voice their concerns, opinions and suggestions to their representatives, which they elected into office. The visit will be undertaken under the theme 'Taking Government to the People'," the SAPS said in a statement.

This year alone, many people heve either lost their lives or have been injured as gangs in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas battle for turf resulting in an un-ending cycle of shootings and retaliations.

Unfortunately, many innocent members of the public have also been caught in the crossfire.
