Northern Areas parents arrested after clashes with police

MARCH 10, 2016

Several parents of school children were arrested on Wednesday in Port Elizabeth's Nothern Areas after they clashed with police.

Northern Areas Education Forum member Nathan Boneparte said police had arrested 14 parents.

"We have been arrested for exercising our democratic rights. They are taking us to Galvandale police station," he told News24.

Boneparte said police fired stun grenades at the protesting parents who had blocked Stanford Road. He said parents blocked the streets because education officials had not arrived as promised to receive their memorandum of demands.

"We applied for this protest. We marched peacefully until we realised that the education department is not coming to meet us. We decided to block the road to exercise our right to protest," he said.

Parents are protesting because of the lack of teachers, and because some of the teachers had not been paid.

The protesting parents had previously closed down all schools in the area.

Police said they would be able to provide information on the protest at a later time.
