NOW OPEN: The ‘New’ Cash Store is back and better than ever
The Sardinia Bay area, just out of Port Elizabeth, could easily be the Friendly City’s answer to the Garden Route. The area is stunningly beautiful with lush shrubs, Milkwood trees and lots of attractive properties including lodges, riding schools and restaurants.
Nicely set in this scenic location, along the Sardinia Bay Road, is The ‘New’ Cash Store which recently changed hands and has undergone some tasteful makeovers. The original Cash Store opened its doors in 1936 as a store where farmers bought supplies such as food and tobacco. It stayed that way until 1992 when it was converted into a restaurant.
Stepping inside, I immediately noticed the spacious dining room and retractable roof as well as the sizeable pub area and a huge red tent that had been set up over the equally wide and refurbished deck area. I then caught up with the restaurant’s new owners, Doug and Claire, who gave me a tour of the place.
While they had only been in charge for two weeks, it was apparent on my visit that they want The Cash Store to be the best place for families to kick back and enjoy an unrivalled dining experience in a totally relaxed environment.
Besides the extensive renovations inside, they have built a new pizza oven and large wooden deck leading off the new bar area. I learnt from them that some of the beautiful furniture decorating the dining area was made in the 1800’s and had been imported from the UK.
The dining room has 3 hearty fire places and leading off it is a fun kiddies’ room with a chalk board wall and DVD-player, so that parents with kids can enjoy their meals and conversations without disturbances.
Outside, the vegetation that once covered the entrance to the restaurant is now gone, and has been replaced with a water feature and a planted 1820 Settler’s Ox Wagon. The kiddie’s garden has been trimmed and neatened up to create space for garden seating, tables and a jungle gym for kids.
I had a quick glance at the new establishment’s menu, and was impressed by the appetising - yet reasonably priced, selection of meals on offer. And yes, the famous Sunday Buffet is still firmly part of The Cash Store’s DNA.
It is fair to say that under the new owners’ direction, The Cash Store has certainly entered a new era. To experience The ‘New’ Cash Store, visit 278 Sardinia Bay Road or call 041 366 1211.
