The NSRI has over 1 000 unpaid volunteers countrywide, including at Port St Johns, Oyster Bay, East London, Port Alfred, Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape, who respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year to save lives on South African waters.

It is a massive organisation, with an annual running cost of over R73.4 million that is used to run 96 rescue craft, 38 Rescue vehicles, 16 quad bikes and 11 tractors.

Some of this money comes from community support during such fundraising activities.
