Nzimande in spat with Malema

Higher Education Minister, and South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Blade Nzimande, has become embroiled in a war of words with Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema, over the latter’s enrolment at UNISA.

Addressing Parliament before his budget vote speech earlier this week, Nzimande lashed out claims that Malema was studying towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications and African languages, saying that the EFF leader, who reportedly signed up for the course in 2011, should provide evidence that he was indeed studying.

In response, the EFF’s official twitter account tweeted, “Minister Blade asked for confirmation that CiC is indeed studying with UNISA. We can confirm, & now want confirmation of Zuma's studies too! (sic),” allegedly referring to the president’s short biopic on the African National Congress’ website, which states that he never received “formal schooling due to a deprived childhood”.

Rebuking the tweet, Nzimande’s spokesperson, Khaye Nkwanyana, said that Zuma had nothing to do with matter and that Malema must provide proof as requested by the Minister.

“[Malema] must not use it as a political gimmick to drag Zuma’s name into the mix. Let him submit the proof to the minister,” The Citizen quoted Nkwanyana as saying, to which Malema later replied, “He must look after his skin first. He must reduce [his] alcohol intake before asking for anything from me”.
