ODI open their backpackers

Port Elizabeth’s oldest dive school, Ocean Divers International (ODI), have opened a backpackers lodge at their property in Albert Road, Walmer.

Peter Deyzel, the newly-appointed and dynamic General Manager of ODI, says; “We have a lot of people coming from out of town to do dive courses or to enjoy a few days of diving. By opening a backpackers lodge, we are able to provide them with inexpensive accommodation for the duration of their stay.”

The backpackers lodge has a total of 20 beds in three rooms. The lodge’s largest room has ten beds and the other two can accommodate six and four people each. The smaller rooms are designed to cater for families or a group of friends.

Peter adds; “Our self-catering accommodation is just R150 per person per night, but for those on diving courses, we charge R100 per person per night. Our dive courses vary in length from a four-day Open Water Course to a full month for a Dive Instructor Course. Those people coming from Rhodes University or Graaff-Reinet to obtain a dive qualification now have a place that is very reasonably-priced to rest after a busy day in the pool, lecture hall or the ocean.”

The ODI backpackers has a large, open-plan kitchen with all the amenities required to cook a great meal after a busy day. There are braai facilities in the garden and the lounge area is spacious, with deep couches and a large flat screen TV with DSTV. Peter has plans to open a pub just outside the lounge.

The backpacker lodge beds have duvets and pillows and visitors are not expected to provide their own linen. Tea, coffee and rusks are also available for free!

The opening of a backpackers lodge at ODI is part of Peter’s ongoing rejuvenation and improvement of ODI. He says that his time and effort is paying off as there has been a surge in the number of people using ODI’s diving services.
