ON A GROWTH PATH: Omega Group: as diverse as the needs of the Eastern Cape
In 2009, when the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality needed a new Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system built to ease traffic between the Port Elizabeth International Airport and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, they contracted the Omega Group.
This is but one of about 350 high profile projects the group has successfully delivered including the Diaz Road extension in Kensington, Port Elizabeth as well as the construction of roads in KwaNobuhle, near Uitenhage, and Jeffrey’s Bay Lifestyle Centre.
The group, then called Omega Civils, was founded in 1994 and has grown to become one of the Eastern Cape’s top construction firms. It originally started with only two shareholders, four monthly staff members and 22 hourly-paid employees.
In 1998, two more shareholders joined the company and by 2007, the company had grown to employ 39 monthly and some 350 hourly-paid staff. Its geographical footprint now covered a large portion of the Eastern Cape Province.
An early adopter of transformation in the construction sector, in 2009, the company transferred about 50% of its shares to a new BEE shareholder, making the builders BEE Level 4 compliant.
The company also achieved a Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) rating of 7CE PE and 6GB and registered with the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP).
Following the establishment of Omega Building Trust (CIDB rating: 4GB) in 2005, which has now successfully completed over 36 projects for various clients in the local government and private sectors and is registered with the Master Builders Association (MBA) and the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), the company added three more divisions - Omega Administration Trust, Omega Asphalt Trust and Omega Construction Equipment Trust, in 2007 to become the Omega Group.
This has enabled the group to effectively cater for all the aspects relating to the construction of Industrial, Commercial and Housing (both upper to low income spectrum); civil works; bulk earthworks, road works, concrete works and specialised asphalt services as well as the hiring of construction-related plant equipment, all under one roof.
The company remains true to its motto – ‘quality is the correct measure’, and has endeavoured to always provide their staff with the best training possible. Coincidentally, omega in the Greek alphabet means great or mega.
