One killed, five wounded in Northern Areas gang violence


One person was killed, while five others injured in three separate shootings that occurred on Wednesday. The shooting incidents all occurred within the time span of three hours.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said to AlgoaFM News that five people were shot in Borchard Street, Gelvandale by gunmen emerging from a Volkswagen Polo.

"It is alleged that a group of people were standing on the road next to a silver VW Polo when the suspect’s vehicle, a white VW Polo, drove up next to the group," Naidu said.

She said that two men appeared from the vehicle and randomly fired at the group of people, as well as at the people inside the car. After which they then drove off.

“The injured, three men and two women, were taken to hospital for treatment. Police are investigating five counts of attempted murder," she said.

In the second incident, 23-year-old Romane Gojane was fatally wounded in Kleinskool.

"It is alleged that at about 15:45, Gojane sustained multiple gunshot wounds while walking on the main road in Kleinskool. Police are investigating a case of murder," said Naidu.

She also said a 26-year-old man was shot in his leg while walking alongside Kobus Road, Gelvandale. She had reported that the victim was walking to his grandmother’s house at around 17:45 when a gunman drove by and began shooting at him.

“The victim was taken to hospital for treatment. A case of attempted murder is being investigated,” Naidu said.

No arrests have been made and it was encouraged that the public come forward with any relevant information that could assist the police investigation.
