Only 12 EMS vehicles in Nelson Mandela Bay

SEPTEMBER 22, 2014

Nelson Mandela Bay has 12 emergency service vehicles, three patient transport vehicles and 23 ambulances according to figures provided by National Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

Replying to a question from Elsa van Lingen (DA) in the National Council of Provinces, the Minister said of the 12 emergency vehicles, three were rescue, seven response and the other two service.

Motsoaledi said all the emergency vehicles were licensed and roadworthy, adding that these vehicles were replaced once they had reached a threshold of 100 000 kilometres.

He said that because of the “long turnaround time” in the replacement of ambulances, they were used over 180 000 kilometres until replacement vehicles were available.

Motsoaledi said the annual maintenance cost of each vehicle, inclusive of tyres and service, was R284 000. -  metrominutes
