Operation Lockdown officers make several gang-related arrests this week alone
The Operation Lockdown intervention team, including the Gang Task Team, made significant arrests of suspects allegedly involved in gang-related crimes in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth over the past five days, police said.
"Suspects are feeling the pressure and a 22 year-old suspect handed himself over to police on Thursday," Port Elizabeth police said.
"It is alleged that on 5 July 2016, at about 16:00, the suspect shot at police in Kobus Street, Gelvandale.
"A case of attempted murder was opened."
The suspect, Romario De Lange, appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates' Court on Friday and he was remanded in custody until next week Thursday.
On Monday, the Gang Task team assisted by the intervention team arrested Jerome Prins (18 years) - alias Rompa, at his house in Gelvandale.
"Prins was charged on 3 counts of attempted murder. It is alleged that the three complainant’s were sitting near a play park in Gelvandale when the suspect appeared and started shooting at them. The victims ran in different directions. No injuries were sustained," police said.
He appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 20 July and was remanded in custody to Thursday next week.
Again, on Monday, the intervention team were doing stop and search operations in Bongo Street, Gelvandale when they arrested Rian Rademeyer (24 years), who is a suspect in an attempted murder case which took place on 15 July 2016.
"It is alleged that the complainant was standing at the corners of Deveril and Standford Roads when the suspect shot at him. Rademeyer appeared in court on Wednesday and the case is remanded to Thursday next week," police said.
On Tuesday, the Gang Task Team also arrested a 34year-old suspect for the alleged murder Sean Berry (30) alias Naco.
"It is alleged that on 19 June this year, at about 20:45, Sean Berry and his friend were standing outside Berry’s parent’s house in Barends Street, Salt Lake, North End, when three males approached them.
"The suspects started shooting at the duo. Berry sustained multiple gunshots to his body while the other victim (34 years) was shot twice. Berry died while on the way to hospital. The suspects fled on foot," police said.
"Gregory Mali appeared in court on Wednesday and remains in custody until his next appearance on Thursday next week."
On Thursday, two suspects appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ court on a charge of possession of abalone. It is alleged that on 19 July 2016, members from the K9 unit deployed under Operation Lockdown received information of illegal abalone activities taking place at a house in McHardy Avenue in Holland Park, PE.
When officers arrived there, they managed to arrest a 32 year-old female suspect.
"A male suspect managed to flee but was later arrested. Emely Van Jaarsveld and Jean-Pierre Scharder were released on R1 000 bail each and their next appearance in court is on 11 August 2016," police said.
"This morning [Friday], at about 08:00, members of the Visible Gang Intervention Unit were in Gale Street Gelvandale when their vehicle was stoned by three people. A detective vehicle who was traveling behind the marked police vehicle witnessed the incident and chased after the suspects. Three suspects, two aged 18 and a 36 year old were arrested and detained for Malicious Damage to Property," police said.
"The total number of firearms confiscated for the month of July is 12. Police performing duties under Operation Lockdown are working tirelessly to ensure that the people of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp ARE and FEEL safe. The Acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road cluster, Brig Ernie Neveling, stated that our members are committed to bringing criminals to book and we will ensure that, through our investigations, criminals will be sent to prison for a long time."
