Operation Lockdown officers nab 'drug lord' at well-known drug den

JUNE 8, 2016

Members of the intervention team performing Operation Lockdown duties in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas successfully executed a search warrant at a well-known drug den on Tuesday afternoon in Shauderville, Gelvandale.

"A 31 year-old man, an alleged 'drug lord', was arrested and detained on a charge of dealing in drugs. Quantities of the drug known as Tik, a licenced 9mm firearm, ammunition and a substantial amount of cash were seized by the police team," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Colonel Naidu said that the distribution and sale of drugs are major contributory factors to gang violence, which inevitably affects and compromise the security and safety of innocent community members.

"The SAPS is committed to closing all avenues for drug dealers and syndicates."

Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, said; "The SAPS continues on our mission to rid the Northern Areas of PE of gang-related violence and criminal activities. Our message is clear and unambiguous -  we will deal decisively with those breaking the law, and we will be intensifying our resolve in dealing with the scourge of drugs, illegal firearms and violence. We call on communities to continue providing tip offs to the police in order to make their neighbourhoods  safer."
