This past Easter weekend was a busy one for traffic authorities who arrested over 1 300 motorists for various offences across the country. In Johannesburg alone, around 640 drivers were arrested for drunk driving at road blocks in the city, Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar, said.

"There were also 53 motorists arrested for speeding including a man in a Jaguar caught at 180km/h on N1 south Midrand at 10am on Sunday, rushing to a church where he was supposed to be the best man."

He said the groom was also arrested shortly afterwards in a Proton car at 161km/h, on N1 south Midrand.

Meanwhile, Traffic Road Management Corporation spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said 700 drivers were arrested for various traffic violations nationally.

That brought the number of arrested motorists to 1 393.

Zwane also said 350 cars and 1 000 buses were impounded for being unroadworthy.
