Over 100 arrested under Operation Lockdown in the past week alone

SEPTEMBER 12, 2016

Over the past week, between Monday and Saturday, 105 people were arrested on various charges and a variety of crime exhibits were seized by police officers conducting Operation Lockdown duties in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas - particularly, in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp.

"Of those arrested, four were for murder, one for attempted murder, five for attempted hijacking, six for the possession of stolen property, one for serious assault and three for the possession of unlicensed firearms. Over 80 persons were arrested on drug-related charges," police said on Sunday.

"Five firearms, 30 rounds of ammunition, four suspected stolen vehicles and different drugs (including Tik, Mandrax, dagga and Stilpane tablets) were seized."

Operation Lockdown was launched in March 2016 in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas as a way of curbing crime - especially gang-related crime and violence that had taken root in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp.

The continuing proactive operations under OpLockdownPE are achieving results.

"We urge communities to assist the police by giving tip-offs by calling 0860010111 or sms'ing 32211 - anonymity guaranteed," the police said.
