Over 170 suspects arrested in Uitenhage weekend anti-crime operations

Uitenhage police on Monday said that they arrested more than 170 suspects through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend. 

"A total of 33 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R16 500," said police spokesperson,  Captain Gerda Swart. 

"The suspects were arrested on charges relating to attempted murder, robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft, possession of suspected stolen goods, etc. 

"Fourteen arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor while 37 persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession.  A total of 46 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes." 

Captain Swart said that the police will continue to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property," he said.
