Over 189 arrested in Uitenhage weekend crime operations

More than 189 arrests were effected over the past weekend, from 06:00 on Friday, until 06:00 on Monday, during crime prevention operations that were conducted in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"A total of 72 traffic fines, to the value of R36 000, were issued, which related to different traffic offences like driving without a valid driver license, etc. 

"Ten persons were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor; 72 persons were arrested on less serious offences, such as drinking in a public place, urinating in a public place, etc," Uitenhage police said. 

"Other arrests varied from robberies, burglaries, possession of suspected stolen goods; three arrests were made for the illegal possession of drugs (tik and dagga) and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm."   

According to the police, the main purpose of the operations was to address crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue to effectively address crime in the area and the SAPS are committed to decrease crime effectively," police said.

"The South African Police Service appeals to the community to work with them and provide valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects."
