Parties bring out the big guns for Wednesday's by-election

AUGUST 17, 2015

The battle for control of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is heating up ahead of the 2016 Local Government Elections and parties are not leaving anything to chance.

On Sunday, Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle led the African National Congress (ANC) Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) on a door-to-door campaign in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's ward 30 (Veeplaas), where they sought to woo residents to vote for the ANC.

The group also included Nelson Mandela Bay councillors led by executive Mayor, Danny Jordaan.

A by-election is expected in the Ward on Wednesday. This follows the death of former ANC councillor, Mike Tofile.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has brought out Chairperson, Mmusi Maimane, who will be accompanied by Federal Chairperson and Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral candidate, Athol Trollip, for a campaign in the same area on Monday.

Both parties have held several campaigns in the ward to date.

The by-election will be contested by Sizakele Lawrence Mnqamisa of the ANC; Eric Jinikwe of the DA; and Mandla Louis Faltein of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

The DA is determined to unsit the ANC in the Bay in the 2016 elections and a win on Wednesday will be a great confidence boost.
