SEPTEMBER 22, 2014

The number of passengers arriving at and departing from Port Elizabeth Airport on scheduled and unscheduled flights continues to decline with the total for the first five months of the current financial year down 0.4% on the previous year.

Figures released by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) show that the number of passengers arriving or departing on scheduled flights last month, however, increased by 1 325 to 103 432.

The ACSA statistics, however, show that numbers arriving or departing on unscheduled flights dropped by 514 to just 158.

With the exception of the 2010/11 financial year when South Africa hosted the World Cup the number of passengers using the airport has been steadily declining, and in the first five months of the current financial year 42 369 fewer passengers arrived and departed at or from Port Elizabeth than in 2009/10.

The figures show that the number of passengers arriving at and departing from the East London Airport in the first five months of 2014/15 declined by 5.8% compared to the previous year.

The number of passengers arriving and departing on scheduled and unscheduled flights at and from the East London Airport last month dropped by 2 530 to 53 401, the fifth month in a row that there has been a decline in the numbers using the airport. - metrominutes
