Passenger Numbers Through PE Airport Still Declining

The number of passengers arriving at or departing from the Port Elizabeth Airport in the first four months of the current financial year dropped by 0.7% compared with the same period in the last financial year.

Figures released by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) show that 405 617 passengers used the airport over this period, compared to 408 656 in the first fourth months of 2013/14.

For the second month in a row, how-ever, the number of passengers has shown a marginal increase compared to the same month in 2013/14 and last month rose from the 104 405 recorded in July 2013 to 105 250.

The figures show that while the number of passengers on scheduled flights increased from 103 757 to 105 112 y/y, the number on unscheduled flights plummeted from 648 to 138 y/y last month.

Passenger numbers through the East London Airport were also down, drop-ping by 6.1% to 212 778 for the first four months of the current financial year compared to 226 495 in 2013/14.

The numbers have dropped in each of the first four months of 2014/15, although June and July saw a slowing down of this trend and last month 56 080 passengers passed through the airport compared with 58 250 in July 2013. - MetroMinutes
