PE lawyer in hate speech row

BY CHARL BOSCH - JANUARY 14, 2016

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has reportedly opened a case of hate speech against a Port Elizabeth attorney with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), after she referred to Jews as “monsters” on social media.

According to Eyewitness News (EWN), Maureen Jansen wrote in a post on Facebook that “Israelis should be exterminated along with the Jews” and that “Semites of the Torah are long gone. These monsters are Jewish converts, not Semites”.

“Any form of incitement of violence is unacceptable in South Africa. We do have laws to protect us against these kinds of speech and that’s why we’ve decided to take this to the human rights commission, so that they will look into this, investigate it and hopefully take action,” the organisation’s Wendy Kahn was quoted by EWN as saying.

The latest incident comes after a series of racial motivated social media posts went public last week with a number being reported to the SAHRC.
