PE police appeal for leads after woman is gang-raped, assaulted and left for dead

BY YOLANDA PALEZWENI - OCTOBER 27, 2016

The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FSC)  in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, appealed to local residents to assist them in tracing suspects, who they believe can assist them in their investigation, after a 24 year-old woman was raped and left for dead in bushes near Victoria Drive, Port Elizabeth, on the 1st of October.

It is alleged that, the victim was lured from a club in Central, Port Elizabeth, by three suspects and taken to Walmer at about 2:00am.

“The victim alleged that she was taken to a flat where one of the suspects attempted to rape her, but she managed to fight him off and that is when the suspect contacted the other two suspects to fetch the victim from the flat,” said police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

She added that, at that stage, the victim was under the impression that they were going to take her back to Central, but instead they drove in Victoria Drive - into a bushy area, where she was allegedly raped by both men. They also badly assaulted the woman before leaving her for dead in the bushes.

However, the victim managed to find her way back to Victoria Drive and was assisted by members of the public.

A case of rape and attempted murder was opened. No arrests have been made yet.

Police have appealed to anyone, who might know the suspects or their whereabouts, to contact D/Sgt Sonika Van Der Merwe from the FCS unit on 071 475 2309.
