Phicor becomes key supplier to the NMMU’s new Life Sciences building

Earlier this year the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) began construction on their new Life Sciences building, which forms part of their award-winning Urban Design Framework.

The project is overseen by a joint-venture between Port Elizabeth firm, Muse Architects, and the international CMV Architects, while Aveng Grinaker LTA are the main contractors for the entire project.

Another Port Elizabeth-based firm, Phicor Architectural Products, have been contracted to supply and install the cladding, ironmongery and metal work on this project.

Phicor Architectural Products has been in business since 2011 and carries a unique range of products for both residential and commercial use – including glazed facades, curtain wall systems, roof lights and swing and sliding door systems, just to name a few.

The Life Sciences building, which is set for completion in 2016 and is situated on the NMMU’s South Campus, has been in the university’s plans for the past five years with the entire project worth R57 million.

Managing Director of Phicor Architectural Products, Sean Steyn, says “We continually work on new designs and research new product developments. Although we have worked on a number of top end projects recently including East Cape Midlands College, Hopewell Nature Reserve, Willowdene Social Housing and McDonalds Beachfront, we are particularly pleased with the work that we are doing at NMMU.”

One of our latest developments is the use of Ceramic Frit Glass, a process that involves screen printing ceramic frit paint onto the glass and fusing it onto the surface during the toughening or heat strengthening process. The result is a tough decorative glass.”

A key feature of any building is the entrance and it is here, on the Life Sciences building, that Phicor Architectural Products will be installing a Ceramic Frit Glass façade, the first of its kind in Eastern Cape.
