In the early hours of this morning, 11 October 2014, three police officers were on duty charging two suspects at Pinetown police station for the crimes they allegedly committed.

While they were busy charging the suspects, it is alleged that one of the suspects disarmed a police officer of his firearm and shot the three police officers and a second suspect.

One police officer, Warrant Officer Norman John (44) died instantly and the other two officers were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment. The second suspect, who was arrested for drugs, was also wounded during the shooting and later died in hospital.

The suspect (33) who allegedly shot the victims was also shot and killed at the scene. Two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Pinetown police station for further investigation. An inquest docket was also opened for the killing of the suspect who shot the police officers.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni extended her condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Warrant Officer John who died in the line of duty.

She also wished the two injured members who are still in hospital for the injuries they have sustained during the shooting, a speedy recovery.
