Police hunt for Uitenhage robbers

APRIL 7, 2015

On Monday morning, five suspects entered a shop in Caledon Street, Uitenhage (outside Port Elizabeth), armed with firearms and demanded cash and air time, Eastern Cape police said.

The suspects held the owner and his wife at gunpoint before they made away with an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime in a red VW Polo.

Local police were alerted by the complainant and a description of the getaway vehicle was circulated on the police radio.

Despatch Vispol members spotted the vehicle and a car chase ensued. The vehicle eventually stopped and two suspects armed with firearms jumped out and shot at the pursuing policemen.

After a brief shootout, the two suspects jumped back into the vehicle and drove off.

The police vehicle was hit by a bullet from the suspects on the passenger's door. No injuries were sustained.

While on the scene at the shoot-out, police received valuable information that the suspects’ car was parked in a garage at a house in Reservoir Hills, Despatch.

It is further alleged that the suspects held the house occupants at gunpoint before they fled on foot.

Police  later impounded the VW Polo.

Cases of Business Robbery, Attempted Murder, and Pointing of a firearm are being investigated.
