SEPTEMBER 30, 2016

Port Elizabeth police are on the hunt for several suspects after a movie-style chase and shootout at a memorial service of a well-known criminal in New Brighton on Thursday.

The incident occurred after alert PE Flying Squad members spotted a gold Polo Vivo with false registration plates spinning at  the memorial while its occupants shot randomly.

"Members attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspects then fled and shot several times at the police vehicle," said Port Elizabeth police.

"Members gave chase and the suspects drove into a parking area where a service was being held. SAPS members were blocked by seven taxis and was outnumbered by the occupants."

The officers then called for backup and the suspects abandoned the vehicle inside the parking area and again started shooting at the police.

"Various Units and Stations arrived as backup to assist the members and the suspects fled the scene.

"The Polo Vivo was seized," poloice said.

"A case of attempted murder and pointing of firearm has been registered. Police are investigating the matter."
