Police in Port Alfred have launched an investigation after three armed men robbed a shop in Port Alfred on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the owner of the local business was opening the shop when three unknown men with a firearm entered the shop and demanded the owner to open a safe.

“The suspects forced the safe opened and they took undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a company vehicle, which was found abandoned in the Nemato area,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that, after the suspects fled, the owner contacted the police and a case of armed robbery was opened.

“A search for the suspects is still continuing and police received information that the suspects got into the second getaway car - a white VW Polo,” said Captain Govender.

Police have since appealed to local residents, who might have knowledge of the suspects, to come forward and assist in their investigation.

“Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to contact crime stop or the nearest police station,” said Captain Govender.
