Police net several suspects for various crimes over the weekend

Around 24 people are expected to appear in court after they were arrested over the weekend for various crimes. Since Friday, a total of 18 people were arrested for drug related cases in Port Elizabeth, police said.

"Two people were arrested for unlawful possession of firearm and three firearms were confiscated by police. Two people were also arrested for drunken driving," the police added.

On Saturday, at about 09:05 police responded to a complaint in Chatty in Bethesldorp and when they arrived, the complainant handed over a 9mm Norinco pistol and 6 rounds.

"The complainant alleged that the suspect pointed a firearm at him and the suspect was arrested by the community. The suspect is alleged to have been involved in a robbery which took place on Friday," the police said.

"The suspect was handed over to police and detained on charges of pointing of a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as armed robbery. He is expected to appear in court on Monday."

In another incident, on Saturday, a 33 year old man was arrested by police in Anita Drive in Gelvandale for illegal possession of a firearm.

Police have vowed to clamp down on those who disregard the law and have urged the communities to report any suspicious criminal behaviour or activities in their areas.
