Police rebuke Mount Ayliff community after mob justice incident

Eastern Cape police on Monday condemned the behaviour shown by the residents in Lugelweni Village, near Mount Ayliff after they stoned a man to death. The 30-year old victim was killed on Sunday at about 2:00 pm by an angry mob.

According to the police, the community alleged that the deceased was involved in killing other people in the community.

“A group of young people from the village allegedly mobilized themselves to go to the deceased place to assault him. When the deceased saw them coming, he ran away but was caught by the mob and assaulted with stones and later died,” the police said in a statement.

No arrests have yet been made, but the police questioned about 150 people following the incident.

A warning has been issued to the members of the community against taking law into their own hands.

“The SAPS will not tolerate this behaviour, because avenge seekers become criminals themselves, and SAPS will have no option, but to arrest them for their unlawful actions. It is very critical that the community members work with the SAPS and report criminals and criminal activities irrespective of the nature of the incident.”

Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta urged the people of the community to come forward with any information that may help in the investigation.

“Any person who provides valuable information to the police will be protected by law,” said Binta.
