Police Swiftly Arrest Business Robbers and Recover Firearm in Despatch

OCTOBER 13, 2014

Despatch SAPS  members  arrested one suspect within minutes after robbing a Spaza shop. The members were commended for the swift arrest of a 25 year-old suspect and the recovery of a loaded 9mm Pistol  just  a few minutes after a business robbery took place in Thobile Busakhe Street, Khayamnandi, Despatch  on Sunday evening at about 19: 30.

This followed after two suspects armed with fire-arms entered a  foreign national’s spaza shop and demanded cash at gun-point . They fled the scene on foot with a undisclosed amount of cash.

Police were alerted by the owner of the shop and it was established that the suspects were still in the vicinity. When  police approached the scene, one of the suspects fired a shot at the police officials.

The officers responded by returning fire which forced the suspect to run for cover in a nearby house.

The police continued chasing after the suspects and arrested one of them within hundred (100) meters from the scene of the crime. They recovered a 9mm Pistol with a loaded magazine.

The fire-arm will be sent to for ballistic tests to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other crimes. No one was injured during the incident and one  suspect is still at large.

The 25 year old suspect will appear soon in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ court, facing charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed fire-arm and ammunition.
