Police welcome hefty sentence given to 22 year-old robber and murderer

Tamara police on Thursday welcomed the harsh sentence given to Thandolwethu Manayo, 22, by the Bhisho High Court for  robbing and murdering a 50 year-old woman, Noluntu Makani, of Qawukeni Location, Tamara, outside King Williams Town in August 2014.

Manayo was handed twenty years  imprisonment for murder; fifteen years imprisonment for robbery and ten years imprisonment for arson.

"The conviction follows after the Tamara Detectives worked tirelessly in investigating the case and managed to apprehend the suspect," Eastern Cape police said.

"The suspect robbed the deceased of her cellphone and television and after he burnt the house where the deceased was sleeping and she died on the scene on 3 August 2014.

"The suspect was later arrested on 01 September 2014 and the cellphone was recovered in his possession. He first appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrates' Court on the 03th September 2014 for Murder, Robbery and Arson. The investigating officer successfully denied the bail and he was remanded in custody."

According to the police Manayo appeared several times at Court and the case was transferred to High Court on 14 October 2014 and was found guilty.

Station Commander of Tamara SAPS, Captain Zamile Matiso welcomde the sentence aadding that he hoped it will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of crime.

He also commended a sterling work done by Tamara SAPS Detectives that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

"The suspect was convicted within a year and this shows a good job done by Detectives on investigating this case,"  he added.
