Police welcome sentencing of rapist Piet Joseph Hakkelaar

AUGUST 24, 2015

The Cluster Commander of Port Nolloth in Northern Cape Province, Lt Col Brooks on Monday welcomed the sentence handed down to convicted rapist Piet Joseph Hakkelaar (51).

The sentencing comes in the month, which the country is raising awareness on abuse and crimes committed against women and children. The sentence will serve a deterrent measure to offenders of sexual offence related crimes

Hakkelaar was arrested on 12 November 2013, for raping a then 69-year-old woman at Alexander Bay.

The woman was collecting wood near the river when the suspect accosted and raped her. Hakkellar was arrested and released on bail.

On 18 January 2015 while still on bail, he attempted to rape a 57-year-old woman at her home. The victim screamed and fought back the suspect fled.

He was arrested the following day in the area and has since been in custody.

The Port Nolloth Regional Court sentenced Hakkelaar to an effective 17 years imprisonment for both rapes.
