Port Alfred police investigating armed business robbery

Port Alfred police are investigating armed business robbery after three unknown males robbed a store at Xinisa in the Bell area on Saturday afternoon.

According to the police, the suspects, who were all armed with handguns, took various items including cigarettes, electrical appliances and toiletries.

“The local police were alerted and responded almost instantly, they spotted and chased a vehicle which was travelling at a high speed that matched the description of the sought vehicle and suspects, silver VW Polo,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that a shoot-out ensued between the police and the suspects and the suspects drove into a bush and ran away, and members of the police chased them on foot but the suspects managed to get away.

“On the returning to the vehicle, they discovered three handguns hidden under the back seat and a bag belonging to one suspect was found in the boot with items believed to have been stolen in the robbery,” said Captain Govender.

Police Forensic crime scene experts were called as well as other SAPS members and a case of robbery was opened for investigation.
