Port Alfred police have launched an investigation after a 62-year-old man was shot dead on his farm on Wednesday afternoon at Bell area, Port Alfred.

It is alleged that the 62-year-old was driving and when he stopped at the gate of his farm, an unknown man approached him.

According to Port Alfred police, it is understood that a fight broke out between the victim and the suspect. That was when a second man appeared.

“At this stage, the farmer started to run to his bakkie. He managed to get in and tried to get out through the passenger seat side when he was shot in the upper body,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that the man was declared dead on the scene.

Both the suspects are understood to have fled the scene and ran to the nearby bushes.

“The motive for the killing is unknown and a murder docket has been opened for investigation,” said Captain Govender.

The name of the victim will be released once their next of kin has been informed and after a formal identification has been done.

Police have since appealed to local residents, who might have knowledge of the suspects, to come forward and assist in their investigation.

“Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to contact crime stop or the nearest police station,” said Captain Govender.
