Port Alfred police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a bakkie-taxi accident, which claimed the life of a 67 year-old man in the early hours of  Friday morning.

"Police were called to the scene, about 10km outside Port Alfred towards Kenton-On-Sea, at about 5am. On arrival they found the two damaged vehicles, a white Ford Bantam and a Nissan minibus taxi, on the side of the road," described police spokesperson, Captain Luvuyo Mjekula.

"The driver of the Ford Bantam was certified dead at the scene and rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to remove his body from the vehicle. He has been identified as Des Kraft, 67, from Alexandria.

"The 40 year-old driver of the minibus taxi sustained various injuries and was admitted to the local hospital. He is from Mthatha."

Captain Mjekula said it is not yet clear what the actual cause of the crash was and police are investigating.

"The road had to be closed for about three hours as emergency services and law enforcement authorities cleared the scene," he said.

"It has since been reopened and traffic is flowing smoothly."
