Port Elizabeth Abalone Wars: Three in custody and gear seized

OCTOBER 14, 2015

One person was arrested and a vessel with diving gear seized between Bluewater Bay and Coega, in Port Elizabeth, during a joint abalone/marine law operation by the Port Elizabeth Tactical Task Force, police, SANParks and Department of Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) on Tuesday morning.

The 40-year-old suspected abalone poacher was busted just as he beached the vessel and tried to flee into nearby bushes.

In the afternoon, the police also pounced on his two of accomplices, after they swam about two kilometres from Bird Island (where they had been left stranded in the morning, following the arrest of the 40 year-old suspect) to the beach.

Both suspects are expected in court soon on poaching charges.
